Migraine Surgery

Some migraines START at specific points on the face and head. The pain STARTS at one spot, then spreads all over the head. You can often point to this spot with one finger. Those spots are:

1. At the side of the head (above the ear)
2. At the eyebrow (above the eyes)
3. At the back of the head
4. Behind the eyes (nasal sinuses)
5. Top of the head

There is a small nerve just under the skin in each of those spots. In some patients, this nerve can get compressed (either by a muscle, or a blood vessel, or fascia). Such compression of the nerve will irritate it, and cause inflammation at that spot. The ensuing inflammation of the nerve (i.e. neuralgia) will trigger a migraine attack. Migraine surgery works by releasing the nerve from the compression. Only small cuts are needed. Once the nerve is released, the inflammation goes away, and the migraine trigger is gone. No more headaches!
